Restoring files from an encrypted backup
Why
An encrypted backup works just like an ordinary one, except that reading the files needs the backup password.
Before you start
- You need the password given when the backup was created. Upper and lower case matter.
- The password cannot be recovered or reset (see “I don't remember the backup or disc password”).
Step by step
- Restoring the whole backup: proceed as in the task “Restoring the whole backup or a single folder”. The program detects by itself that the backup is encrypted. In the “Password” box, enter the password used when the backup was created and click “Restore files”.
- A single file: proceed as in the task “Restoring a single file or an older version of it”. When the program asks, enter the backup password.
What you should see
As with an unencrypted backup: the summary “Done:” or the message “Saved:”. The restored files are ordinary, decrypted files.
If something goes wrong
- The program does not accept the password, or the restore ends with decryption errors: enter the password again, paying attention to upper and lower case and to the keyboard layout (for example accented letters). The program has no other key to the backup.
- The password is lost: see “I don't remember the backup or disc password”.
