Restoring a single file or an older version of it
Why
When you need one file from the backup, for example a contract that was deleted, or the version of a document from a few days ago, before bad changes were made to it.
Step by step
- In the menu on the left, click “Browse”, choose the backup folder and click “Open” (see “Finding a file in the backup and browsing its versions”).
- If you do not know which version has the state of the file you need: select the file, click “File history” and check in which versions it changed. Double-clicking a version opens the file from that version for viewing.
- In the list of versions, choose the version with the state of the file you need and find the file in the folder tree.
- Select the file and click “Save as…”.
- Choose a location and a file name and click “Save”. If the backup is encrypted, the program asks for the backup password.
What you should see
The message “Saved:” with the path to the saved file.
What next
- It is safer to save the older version under another name or in another folder, compare it with the current file, and only then replace it. That way you do not lose changes that may still be useful.
- You save a whole folder from the chosen version with one click: select it in the tree and click “Save folder…” (see “Restoring the whole backup or a single folder”).
If something goes wrong
- The “Save as…” button is inactive: a folder is selected, not a file. You save a folder with the “Save folder…” button.
- The list has no version with the state of the file you need: the program may already have deleted it according to the setting for how many versions to keep (see “Choosing how many versions to keep”). Check the archive discs (see “Restoring files from a disc”) and the off-site backup (see “Restoring from the off-site backup”).
- The password does not match: see “Restoring files from an encrypted backup”.
