Recovering files on a new computer
Why
After a computer fails or is stolen, or after you buy a new one: to move the files from the backup to the new computer.
Before you start
- You need the backup drive, and if you do not have it: the details of the off-site backup (see “Restoring from the off-site backup”).
- If the backup is encrypted, you need the backup password.
- The program's settings and templates live on the old computer, not in the backup. On the new computer you set them up again.
Step by step
- Install Sigelith Backup from the Microsoft Store (see “Installing the program”).
- Connect the backup drive.
- Start the program. The first time, the first backup wizard opens: click “Cancel” in it. (On later starts, clicking “Restore files” on the “What would you like to do?” screen is enough.)
- In the menu on the left, click “Restore” and restore the files as in the task “Restoring the whole backup or a single folder”. If the new computer has the same drive letters and folder names as the old one, you can choose the “Restore to the original locations” layout. Otherwise, choose “Recreate the full folder structure” and move the files into place by hand.
What you should see
The summary “Done:” and your files on the new computer.
What next
- Set up your backups again (see “Creating your first backup with the wizard”). As the backup location you can choose the same folder on the same drive: the program recognises the existing backup and writes the next versions alongside the old ones.
- If you have archive discs, load their register on the new computer (see “The disc register: where discs are kept and finding files”). A copy of the register is in the backup folder, in the “Sigelith Discs” folder.
- Move your Sigelith Desktop evidence as described in the task “Protecting Sigelith Desktop evidence”.
If something goes wrong
- The backup is only off-site: see “Restoring from the off-site backup”.
- The program does not see the backup drive: check in File Explorer that the drive is visible, and in step 4 choose it again with the “Choose…” button.
