Saving settings as a template
Why
A template remembers the backup settings: folders, backup location, options and exclusions. You run a backup from a template with one click, from the menu of the icon by the clock, or on a schedule.
Before you start
- Set up the backup on the “Backup” page (see “Creating a backup without the wizard”). The wizard saves a template by itself.
- The password never goes into the template. The program remembers it in Windows Credential Manager or asks for it every time the backup runs.
Step by step
Saving a template
- On the “Backup” page, click “Save as template”. The button works when there is at least one folder on the list and a backup location has been chosen.
- In the “Save template” window, enter a name in the “Template name:” field. The program suggests “Backup of” followed by the name of the first folder.
- In the “Schedule:” field, choose when the backup should start by itself (see “Setting up automatic backups”).
- Click “Save”.
Using a template
In the menu on the left, click “Templates” and select the template in the “Saved templates” list. Below the list you see its settings, the date it was created and its last run. The buttons:
- “Run backup”: makes a backup according to the template. If the backup is encrypted and the password is not remembered, the program asks for it.
- “Restore from this backup”: opens the “Restore” page with the backup folder filled in. If the backup password is remembered, the program uses it without you typing it and without showing it.
- “Load into the form”: moves the settings to the “Backup” page.
- “Off-site backup…”: a second, encrypted backup in an online service (see “Setting up an off-site backup”).
- “Delete”: deletes the template and the passwords remembered for it. It does not delete any backup files.
You change the name in the field above the buttons with the “Save the name” button. You can also run a backup from a template from the menu of the icon by the clock: “Back up now”.
Changing a template's settings
- On the “Templates” page, select the template and click “Load into the form”.
- Change the settings on the “Backup” page. The remembered password is kept, so you can leave the password fields empty. If the backup is encrypted and should start by itself, but the password is not remembered yet, enter it in both fields and tick “Remember the password in Windows Credential Manager”.
- Click “Save as template” and keep the same name. When asked “Replace the template?”, answer “Yes”. The save window suggests the existing schedule, and the off-site backup settings and the history of runs are kept.
What you should see
The template is in the “Saved templates” list on the “Templates” page and in the menu of the icon by the clock, under “Back up now”.
What next
- Schedule: see “Setting up automatic backups”.
- The results of recent backups are in the “Recent operations” list on the “Templates” page. The full record: see “Where to find details: the program log”.
If something goes wrong
- “Save as template” is inactive: add at least one folder in the “What we back up” box and choose a folder in “Where we write”.
- “Password not saved”: the password did not reach Windows Credential Manager. The template works, but the program will ask for the password every time, and scheduled backups will not start. Enter the password in both fields and save the template again.
- “No template selected”: first select a template in the list.
