⁦C.⁩ Backup on discs

Recording a large backup on several discs

Why

When the files do not fit on one disc, the program spreads them over a set of several discs by itself. Every disc of the set has its own checksums, recovery data and seal, so you can check each one separately.

Before you start

  • Have as many blank discs ready as the wizard shows on the “Disc plan” page, plus one spare.
  • You record the whole set in one wizard window, disc after disc. Set aside time for it: each disc means recording and checking.

Step by step

  1. Start as in the task “Recording a backup version on a disc” or “Recording selected files and folders”.
  2. On the “Disc plan” page you see the number of discs and the size of each, for example “Disc 1: about 23.9 GB”. There may also be information about files larger than a disc, which will be split into parts, and about folders with masses of small files, which will go into tar archives. Click “Next”.
  3. Record the first disc as in the task “Recording a backup version on a disc”, steps 8 to 11.
  4. Click “Prepare disc 2 of …”. The program prepares the next disc. When it asks, insert a blank disc and click “Record disc…”.
  5. Repeat this until you have recorded all the discs, and click “Finish”.

What you should see

All the discs of the set in the “Archive discs” window, with their number in the set in the “Contents” column, for example “set 2/3”.

What next

  • On the ring of each disc, write its label and its number in the set, for example 2/3.
  • Keep the discs of a set together.
  • A file larger than a disc can be restored only from all the discs that hold its parts. The program asks for the next discs (see “Restoring files from a disc”).

If something goes wrong

  • The wizard window closed before the set was finished: the set cannot be finished in a new window. Record the whole set again. The discs from the interrupted set stay in the register, and the files that lie on them in full can be restored from them.
  • You ran out of blank discs: the wizard waits for the next disc as long as needed, but do not close the window.
  • Other messages: see “If something goes wrong” in the task “Recording a backup version on a disc”.
